Gig Updates
November 29, 2008-Saturday
Moondogs:
Blawnox, PA
Ron Moondog Esser called the house and said he
wanted to do something different, Moondog’s Outlaw Allstars. I was like,
dat’s cool. He said, call Gil Snyder, Kenny Blake, and Glenn Pavone, so
I made da calls and it all worked out pretty slick. We did a short
opening set with me, Harry, Stutso and the big cheese, Glenn Pavone….
“Rebel Rouser”, “Rock n’ Roll City”, “You Go Your Way” with Stutso
rippin a most powerful lead vocal. “Hells Highway”, “Victoria’s
Secret”, a well timed “Stiller Nation” and “Three Times Your Fool”.
After a short pause we got back onstage with Gil n’ Kenny. “I Hate a
Nickel” felt different, so I quit playing guitar and just sang. It made
me feel all special, not havin t’ back myself up n’ all dat. Next up was
Cannonball Adderly’s ole “Mercy, Mercy”. We featured Kenny on dist hang
and he blew strong, we broke it down to bare-naked drums n’ Kenny rippin.
“Look What You Done” was followed by “Shotgun” and “Little Things”. Gil
took off on da swingin “Somethin’s Cookin” and Pavone slapped “Minimum
Wage” all over da stage. We sent out “Happy Birthday” to long time
Moondog patron Gary. Stutso sang “Bowlegged Woman” and I handed my
guitar to Randall Troy, who was in da house and he ripped a hot solo off
for da natives. When we got back up for the final set, a lazy take of
“Hoochie Mama” set up “Tequilla”, which Kenny Blake ate for lunch. Gil
sang a slow blues, Stutso shouted out “Work Together”…………tell ya what, I
had a ton a’ fun bein one of Moondogs Outlaw Allstars.

Road Worthy Tavern:
West Liberty, West Virginia
There was a guy in da house dat used to come and
see us play, back in da day, so when he started shoutin out for tunes,
we played ‘em. “T-Bird”, “Lovedog” n’ da ole doper’s delight ”Smoke Two
Joints”. “Hells Highway” came off strong in the first set. Stutso
sounded great singing that ole Berry song “Promised Land”. We played it
in the right key this time. We also played “Shotgun”, cause we’re
planning on playing it tomorrow night with KB. Our good friend Everett
Metz usually sings “One Way Out” with us, this time we did that and
“Midnight Rider” and “Help Me Make It Thru The Night”. I took a walk on
the break to say hello to da red fox dat Everett carved out of a tree
stump………….I cried out in da dark, “Hello Red Fox, you and I are a lot
alike……then I laughed like a madman………….

Scottdale Fireman’s Club:
Scottdale, Pa.
We got off on da good foot, which was great because
I was sick all week and my confidence wasn’t what it should be.
“Somethin’s Cookin” is starting to find a new feel that’s working wit
Stutso on da tubs. Luv dat. So then I start getting cocky, callin tunes
Stutso never heard before, “Red Hot Lover”, “T-Bird”, and one that he’s
heard but never played, “Boilermaker”, it went well. “Minimum Wage” and
an early “Smoke Two Joints” also came down clean. Folks was screamin for
Harry to sing “King Of The Road”, give da people what they want. “Hell’s
Highway” and “Little Things” led to a heartfelt “Stiller Nation” to
highlight set 2. The unspeakable occurred in set 3 when a garbage can
was wheeled up to da stage and da Ratman jumped out to da beat of a
hypnotic rhythm and did a provocative strip tease. We tried a new cover
tune, Stutso singing da ole Chuck Berry number, “Promised Land”. Next
time we do it, we need to raise the key, ya live, n’ ya learn.
November 8, 2008-Saturday
Rock-A-Fellas Sports Bar:
Sarver, Pa.
We shuffled thru the new instrumental, “Turkey
Strut” then slapped “Rebel Rouser” right on ‘em. New tune “When Times
Was Good” came next, followed by “Look What You Done”. Things got
rocking pretty slick when we hit “Little Things” and “I Hate A Nickel”
back to back, belly to belly…………”High Times” and “Burnin’ Up” are
starting to feel better wit Stutso on tubs. We banged around “Hell’s
Highway” alright. “Smoke Two Joints” came across OK. In the second set
we got ole friend George da Greek onstage to play some drums so Stutso
could get up n’ sing. “You Go Your Way” and “Million Tears” sounded so
good, that we had to bring it again in set three wit da Greek keepin
time n’ Stutso singin “Three Times Your Fool” n’ “Victoria’s Secret”.
November 2, 2008-Sunday
Galleria Mall:
Mt. Lebanon, PA
This special event for the Women’s Center and
Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh was an opportunity for us to be involved
in a very worthwhile project. These folks have done a whole lotta good
for a whole lotta people. Just to be all set and ready to go then, to
look around and realize my dream of playing in a mall had been realized,
almost took my breath away, almost. We opened with “Rebel Rouser”, just
so I could look at da faces in da house and git a make on ‘em. “Look
What You Done” gave them a lazy shuffle to get them moving in my
direction, see what I’m sayin? We then got Mark Stutso to sing “You Go
Your Way”, folks was starting to pay attention, cool. STAR TIME, we
called up da lady Shari Richards, n’ she ripped “Let the Good Times
Roll’ wide open. She then gave new life to some ole standards, “Teeny
Weenie Bit”, “Big Boss Man” and “Use Me”, the ole Bill Withers tune.
Stutso and Harry were jellin da rhythm section which gave me da chance
to enjoy Shari’s performance. Andrew Stockey of WTAE television fame ran
the show during our break. When we came back for set 2 we hit
“Somethin’s Cookin”, then we let Stutso loose on “Victoria’s Secret”.
Shari Richards then found da sweet spot on “Three Times Your Fool”,
strong. We had some fun with Jimmy Reed’s “Hidin n’ Peepin”. “I’d Rather
Go Blind” gave Shari all da room she needed to shout it out. Pittsburgh
legend Robbie Klein, was in da house for most of da show, I asked him to
sit in on Sax, but I think he was just chillin, so maybe next time.
Stay tuned for the
latest updates! Better yet, come to one of the shows and experience "The
Manful Handful" himself, first hand!
